I didn't get to hear Super Fan's regional rankings for this week. Tomorrow they come out though. How do you think they'll look this week? Here are my thoughts...

Analysis on the Rankings:

This past week was full of upsets in both sets of rankings. Let?s start with the Men?s Basketball Rankings. The upsets started on Wednesday night when Western Washington beat Central Washington in Bellingham. That loss opened the door for both Cal State Dominguez Hills and Humboldt State to make a run for the top spot in the rankings. Then, on Friday night, Cal State Dominguez Hills was upset at home by UC San Diego. Now, the door came open for Humboldt State and they found a way to take care of business to get two big wins on the road. Now, the Lumberjacks can wrap up the CCAA regular season title with a win Wednesday night at home against Cal State Dominguez Hills. That game Wednesday night will be our feature game of the week based on the rankings and it could go a long way in deciding the # 1 seed in the West Region.

As I have mentioned in the past, it is a three team race for the # 1 seed in the West Regional for Men?s Basketball. Wednesday night?s game in Arcata could make a two team race heading into the conference tournament. Please note, the GNAC will start play on Tuesday and wrap up their regular season on Thursday night. The CCAA will start play on Wednesday and wrap up their regular season on Friday night. This will allow teams to get their travel arrangements together so they can be ready for the first round of their respective tournament.

Last point on the Men?s Basketball Rankings, with Humboldt State in the # 1 line right now, the Lumberjacks will need a little bit of help. They need San Francisco State to make the West Regional this year. The reason is that there is a rule in place where if all seven teams have to fly to get to the team that is hosting the regional, then the regional committee will have to execute a travel contingency plan. In other words, there will be sub regionals in the West Region as there will be two four team pods at two locations. If San Francisco State makes the West Regional and Humboldt State earns the right to host, then the travel contingency plan can?t be enacted and all participants would head to Arcata for the West Regional. That is why Humboldt State will needs to hope San Francisco State plays well this week and make a good run in the CCAA Tournament to get an eight team field to Arcata.

On the Women?s Basketball Rankings, Cal Poly Pomona was upset by Cal State Stanislaus on Saturday night which allowed Western Washington to climb to the # 1 spot in this week?s rankings. When you look at the rankings this week, I would be very surprised if one of the teams is not mentioned in the upcoming regional rankings for this week. Right now, the top five teams in the Women?s rankings are safe and they will be in the West Regional. Barring any big runs in the conference tournaments, I think Cal State San Bernardino and Hawaii Pacific are the main contenders for the final spots in the West Regional this year.

There will be one more HSFRMI coming out next Monday on February 28th. Then, on Sunday morning on March 6th, the HSFRMI will make its final projection on who will make the West Regional fields and who will host the upcoming championships. There is a lot of basketball left to play and it will be an exciting two weeks before Selection Sunday on March 6th.

I don't think Western Washington is going to be a top 5 in the West after losing to Northwest Nazarene on Saturday night.

Here is the latest Humboldt Super Fan Round Mound Index for Monday February 28th, 2011. The record by each team is the team?s overall record after all of the games were completed on Saturday February 26th, 2011.

This will be the second to the last rankings that will be released for the season. The final rankings will be released on Sunday morning as I will project the eight teams that will advance to the West Regional for both Men?s Basketball and Women?s Basketball. Those teams will be part of the NCAA Division II Championships for the 2010-11 season.

Analysis on the Rankings:

Let?s start with the Men?s Rankings. This past week, I mentioned that three teams were in the hunt for the # 1 seed in the West Region. With Cal State Dominguez Hills losing twice on the road at Humboldt State and at Sonoma State, the Toros have fallen out of the hunt for the top seed. It is now a two team race between Humboldt State and Central Washington. This race is too close to call and it will definitely come down to whichever team does well in their respective conference tournament.

As I look at the rest of the rankings, I feel the top five teams in the rankings are safe and they will be in the West Regional field when it is announced on Sunday March 6th. In regards to Alaska Anchorage and Seattle Pacific, I feel these teams need to do something in the GNAC Tournament to enhance their resume. Those two teams would meet in the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament on Wednesday and the winner of that game, if they meet will be in the West Regional. The loser falls on the bubble.

Based on all of that information, I feel there are two live spots up for grabs this week if there are no major upsets in the conference tournaments in the CCAA and in the GNAC.

In the Women?s Rankings, I feel the top six teams are safe and they will be in the West Regional this year. In looking at the race for the # 1 seed, I think it?s a three team race between Cal State Monterey Bay, Grand Canyon, and Western Washington. With the Otters in the hunt for the # 1 seed, there was one thing that was a question mark on whether they meet the minimum requirements to host the West Regional. In my research on the seating capacity at The Kelp Bed, it?s at 1,000 for maximum seating capacity. In reviewing the handbook, it is right on the number for the minimum seating capacity requirement to host the West Regional. So, Cal State Monterey Bay would meet all of the requirement if they are selected to host the West Regional.

Right now, I am saying that two spots are live this week in the race for the West Regional in the Women?s rankings. I am factoring possible deep runs by teams that need to win their conference tournament to get into the West Regional this year. As those teams fall by the wayside, then teams on the # 7 and the # 8 lines would become safer.

The last point to make on the Women?s Rankings is on Hawaii Pacific. The Sea Warriors are in a tough situation as they need to get wins over Grand Canyon and Dixie State to have any shot to make the West Regional. On top of that, the Sea Warriors need to have chalk to occur in the conference tournament. They are the one big ?X? factor in the race in the West Region.

We are less than a week away from Selection Sunday and the action is really heating up. This will be an exciting week of basketball that will lead to the final projected rankings that will be out on Sunday morning.
